They live their lives grazing on the gently rolling grasslands of one of the West's last short-grass prairies. Still intact and protected from development by conservation easements on over 80% of the valley....the San Rafael is also the headwaters of the Santa Cruz River.
Windmills dot the landscape and cattle rest in the shade of towering cottonwoods that line the meandering river beds and make up the vast system of tributaries that feed the aquifirs below the Coronado National Forest, providing pure drinking water in tanks and streams.
